For editors

The time pressure on senior journalists on specialist titles is often intense, so all these courses run over just half a day. This means each session is very intense and involves the communication of a lot of new ideas, so the action plan drawn up by each candidate at the end of the session will not be dissimilar to that produced after a full day. I’ve found the biggest benefits come when a series of courses are booked monthly, so I can follow-up work from the previous session.

The fundamentals for many of these courses come from my time as editor-in-chief of a division of Emap (now Bauer). During my time I was lucky enough to be able to cross-examine some of the most successful editors in the world and collate their techniques and priorities. By sense-checking these against my own experience on a variety of specialist magazines I was able to arrive at a template for the actions of the ‘perfect’ specialist editor.
