These are tried and tested courses on the basics of journalism for specialist magazines and websites. The structure I’ve found to work best involves short presentations on the theory, followed by relevant tasks where candidates can put that theory into practice. With groups of up to 12 or so, feedback can be precise and immediate (I peer over their shoulders and prod the screen). I have stockpiles of generic exercises for candidates to work on, but even more benefit comes when they bring genuine examples from their work (eg live press releases, commissions, and raw copy).
